Pediatric Neurosurgery

Pediatric neurosurgeons are specially trained to treat brain and spinal injuries, deformities, tumors, trauma, and disease in infants, children, and adolescents.

We know your child’s health is #1 priority, and when surgery is needed, an added layer of stress is involved. Our team works closely with your pediatrician to determine whether surgery is the best option and to ensure you are receiving the best care possible for your child. We perform hundreds of procedures annually at the Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center, Blank Children's Hospital.

The Iowa Clinic Neurological & Spinal Surgery Department is proud to have Dr. Nicholas Wetjen on our team. He is an internationally recognized, fellowship-trained, and double board-certified in neurological surgery and pediatric neurological surgery. He comes to The Iowa Clinic with nearly ten years of experience at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he was the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery. Specializing in pediatrics, he is the only surgeon who performs virtual surgical planning for cranial vault remodeling to correct craniosynostosis in the state of Iowa.

Although pediatrics is his specialty, Dr. Wetjen performs minimally invasive spine surgery, and surgery for epilepsy, brain and spine tumors, vascular malformations, and aneurysms on adults as well.
